Synopsis

On a dazzling yet dangerous night in Tokyo's Ginza during the 1980s, the upper class, artists, and yakuza come together under the allure of jazz to dance. Based on the memoirs of jazz pianist Minami Hiroshi, the story unfolds over a single night, with a forbidden song that changes destinies, intertwining like a Möbius strip.

Program Note

Between the White Key and the Black Key is a film based on the essay of jazz pianist Minami Hiroshi. Set against the backdrop of the Japanese jazz scene in the 1980s, it portrays Minami's transition from a classical music background to a life as a jazz pianist in a Ginza club, exploring this dramatic change through a mystery-like narrative. With its dreamlike jazz melodies, mysterious characters in the Ginza club, and seamless shifts between reality and fantasy, the film embodies the melancholic characteristics of 1980s Japanese cinema. The performance of Sosuke Ikematsu as Minami Hiroshi is also a standout feature of the film. (Choi Eunyoung)

  • Born in 1975, he received an Honorary Mention at the Oberhausen Short Film Festival for his graduation film Dolmen(2000). His feature debut was The Pavilion Salamandre(2006), starring Odagiri Joe. He also directed Pumpkin and Mayonnaise(2017) and the TV series Sell My Hands(2024).
