Synopsis

A year after the sudden death of her mother, Taylor, a 14-year-old Korean-American adoptee becomes increasingly desperate to find her birth parents, especially as her relationship with her father grows more estranged. But when a Korean family unexpectedly immigrates to her all-white neighborhood, she befriends a new maternal figure who connects her to her roots and helps her uncover the truth about her birth family’s whereabouts.

Program Note

Taylor, a Korean-American adoptee, finds herself lost after the sudden death of her mother. During this turbulent time, she meets a Korean family who has just moved in next door. The daughter of the family, Dayoung, dreams of becoming a K-pop star, but her mother wishes for her to focus on her studies. As Taylor grapples with her own struggles, she secretly wishes to find her birth mother, a desire she wants to pursue without her father's knowledge. This film reflects the autobiographical sensibility of Christina Lim, a Korean-American director. The girls strive to pursue their dreams, but the surrounding circumstances cause them to retreat. The film warmly embraces the complex emotions and identity confusion of adolescence. (Choi Eunyoung)

  • Christina Yr. Lim
  • Christina Lim is a Korean-American writer/director who tells fish out-of-water, genre-bending AAPI stories. She holds an MFA from USC’s School of Cinematic Art. She was a fellow of The Black List & WIF Feature Residency, Yale’s directing lab, Cine Qua Non Lab, and EAVE's Ties That Bind. Recently, her feature script GYOPO was selected for Wscripted's Cannes Screenplay List and The Black List x GM incubator fund with which she filmed a proof-of-concept. Her films have screened at Bentonville, Cinequest, and Catalina Film Festival, among others. Her first feature, B-SIDE: FOR TAYLOR, distributed by Buffalo 8 and EST Studios was released in 2024. She will be a fellow of Stowe x Sidewalk’s Story Lab and Reykjavík International Film Festival’s Talent Lab.
