Synopsis

Luther: Never Too Much the documentary film, chronicles the story of a vocal virtuoso. Using a wealth of rarely seen archives, Luther tells his own story with assistance from his closest friends and musical collaborators including Mariah Carey, Dionne Warwick, Valerie Simpson and Roberta Flack. The film relives the many stunning moments of Vandross’ Grammy® award-winning musical career, while exploring his personal life, health struggles, and a lifelong battle to earn the respect his music deserved.

Deep and resonant, yet soft and elegant—that's how anyone hearing his voice for the first time would describe it. Luther: Never Too Much portrays the life of Luther Vandross, a consummate vocalist who possessed power, emotion, and perfect pitch. The film covers his fateful meeting with David Bowie, the overwhelming response to his solo debut single Never Too Much, his rendition of the Carpenters' Superstar, and his duet with Mariah Carey, Endless Love. Through various interviews with those who knew him, the film reinforces the feeling that 54 was far too young an age for him to leave this world. (Kim Yoonha)

  • Dawn Porter, founder of Trilogy Films, is an award-winning documentary filmmaker. Notable works include Gideon’s Army(2013), Trapped(2016), Bobby Kennedy for President(2018), and The Lady Bird Diaries(2023), which won the Lone Star Prize at SXSW and debuted on Hulu. Her latest, Deadlocked: How America Shaped the Supreme Court(2024), is a Spirit Award-nominated docuseries. Porter's films have featured on HBO, Netflix, CNN, PBS, and more. Additional credits include The Me You Can’t See(2021), Rise Again: Tulsa and the Red Summer(2021), The Way I See It(2020), and John Lewis: Good Trouble(2020).
