Synopsis
In a future without men, two robots embark on a quest to become human, an odyssey that takes them across a stark American landscape of haunting, surreal beauty. An extension of the 2005 concept album ‘Human After All’, < Electroma> is the first film directed by Daft Punk, the French electronic band founded by Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. The leaders of the electronic music scene that was jumpstarted in the early 1990s by Prodigy, the duo is considered to have sparked a revolution in the late 1990s house movement in France and gained lasting fame for making France one of the indisputed centers of electronic dance music scene. The pair already wrote a script for the animation < Interstella 5555>(2003), a extended music video of 14 songs from their 2001 album ‘Discovery’. Riding around in a car with a license plate that reads ‘HUMAN,’ robot No.1 and No.2 put human faces on their helmets in the hopes of becoming human, but they soon arouse the anger of local robots and end up melted by the heat of the sunlight. Stunning images and fierce scores replace dialogue in a perfect unfolding of the affecting story of two robots with one simple dream. Although surprisingly Daft Punk did score the film as many expected, the soundtrack is instead a delightful variety of music including soul artist Curtis Mayfield, Brian Eno, rocker Todd Rundgren, Sebastien Tellier, Linda Perhacs and Frederic Chopin.
