Synopsis

Summer vacation is the most anticipated time of year for most children—but not for Masao, who has never known his parents. One day, he comes across his mother's address in a remote town and sets off on a journey to find her. His kind neighbor persuades her ex-yakuza husband to accompany Masao on the trip. Unfortunately, the irresponsible man proves to be more of a burden than a help—gambling away their travel money and even taking Masao's pocket money. Despite their rocky start, the two slowly form a bond and develop a heartwarming, father-son-like relationship as the journey progresses. This masterpiece stands out in Kitano Takeshi’s filmography for its gentle and touching tone—a departure from his usual violent works. Adding an extra layer of warmth is Joe Hisaishi’s lighthearted and nostalgic score. His piano melodies, reminiscent of raindrops falling on lotus leaves, serve as one of the film’s most emotionally resonant elements.
