Synopsis

Monsieurs Richard and Moncharmin have recently bought Paris Opera House, where the retiring manager warns them that they may hear stories about the Opera Ghost who always sits in Box 5. The new owners laugh at such childishness, but soon strange incidents begin to occur. Joseph Buquet, a stagehand, has seen the Phantom, and describes him as a faceless man with no nose. One evening, Carlotta, the prima donna of the opera, is mysteriously taken ill and her role is played by Christine.

  • Rupert Julian
  • Rupert Julian (1879–1943) was New Zealand’s first film actor, as well as a director, playwright, and producer. After starting his acting career in New Zealand, he immigrated to the United States in 1911. He debuted as a director in 1915 and gained success with films like The Kaiser and The Beast of Berlin, becoming a Hollywood star. In 1924, he directed The Phantom of the Opera, although he withdrew from the project shortly before its release. He passed away in Hollywood at the age of 64.
