  • Born in 1965 in Wisconsin, John Ridley began his career in television, working as a writer on shows like Martin and The John Larroquette Show in the 1990s. He published his first novel, Stray Dogs, in 1997. Ridley made his directorial debut with the film Cold Heart, for which he also wrote the screenplay. He went on to work on the TV series Barbershop and directed films such as Undercover Brother. He won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2014 for 12 Years a Slave (2013).
