Synopsis

Dessau, East Germany, 1985: 18-year-old Frank and his friends have been infected by breakdance fever. At first they are suspiciously monitored by the ruling regime, but when the socialist government realizes that it cannot stop them, they try to exploit them instead.

  • Born in Cologne, Germany, in 1974, Jan Martin Scharf gained recognition with his film Truth and Courage (2005), which he both wrote and directed, winning awards at the Montreal and San Jose Film Festivals. In 2000, he also won the German University Film Award’s Gold Prize for his short Friday Night. His vibrant dance film Dessau Dancers, set in East Germany during the Cold War, is based on a true story and was invited to the Toronto and Munich Film Festivals.
