Program Note

Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering were previously nominated for an Oscar for The Invisible War (2012)—a film about sexual assault in the United States military. This time, they examine the ugly side of the music industry. In the wake of the #MeToo movement involving Harvey Weinstein, a woman, who used to work in the music industry, steps forward to blow the whistle on none other than Russell Simmons, the co-founder of the hip-hop label Def Jam. The victim of the assault is Drew Dixon, the daughter of a well-known politician and a renowned musician. She ran away before, and the powerful man’s molestation got brushed under the carpet, away from the public gaze. On the Record goes beyond one woman’s accusation to reflect on how far black women have come in the history of the entertainment industry. (LEE Yong-cheol)
