- In 2001, he made a dazzling directorial debut with I Wish I Had a Wife, which won him the Baeksang Arts Award for Best New Director. His next work, The Mermaid (2004), proved his unique directing skills and earned him the Baeksang Arts Award for Best Director. He then went on to create a wide variety of films, including I Love You, Miss Soon-shi (2005), Sorry, Thank You (2011), Heaven's Children (2012), and The Treacherous (2015). Notably, his film Love+Lies (2016), which depicted the music of the 1940s, was highly praised for its exquisite artistic expression of that era.
