Synopsis

In the 1940s, Gyeongseong was already the age of popular songs. After the appearance of Yoon Shim-duk's “Praise of the Dead” in 1926, colonial Gyeongseong in the 1930s was in the midst of a wave of modernity symbolized by the modern boy, the modern girl, and popular songs. "Haerhwa" recreates the stage of the declining parasitic school “Daesung Kwonbun” in the early 1940s, when popular songs became the norm. Through the intertwined fates of two women who were trained as tugboats and parasites, the film explores the dying parasitic culture and the natural replacement of popular song, which emerged as the core of popular culture, within the dynamic history of Korea on the eve of liberation. “Haerhwa” means “flower that understands words”. But in the end, the fond memory of 'Haehaehwa', which was destined to be defeated, is tightly inscribed in the grand narrative of the fate of the nation. (Meng Soo-jin)
