Program Note

*Midnight Ballad for Ghost Theater*, introduced as Korea’s first full-length musical film in the mid-2000s, remains one of the most unique entries in Korean cinema. Even 15 years later, it feels fresh and incomparable—unlikely to be replicated in the future.

The film is a love letter to cinema itself—an alchemist of light capable of containing every human desire, from heroic adventure and romance to betrayal and greed. At the same time, it is a cinematic rebellion against an industry that no longer leaves room for dreaming. The ghosts who cross into the real world, breaking the boundary between reality and fantasy, represent the director’s open provocation toward the Korean film industry.
