Program Note
Unconsciousness Opening up the Future
Looking back, no other film has had such a profound impact on my life as *The Last Concert*. I was in eighth grade, wearing a black school uniform and sporting a crew cut, when I first saw a picture of Pamela Villoresi at my local barbershop. I fell in love with her—suddenly and completely. After that, I would often rush to the Daehan Theater after school just to see her on screen. I even carried the same white satchel she had in the film until I graduated—people thought I was crazy.
In the movie, she falls in love with a middle-aged pianist. I practiced piano endlessly, trying to master the piece he played for Stella. Back then, I never dreamed of becoming a musician. I actually wanted to become someone much more “powerful.” But my unconscious led me to the things she loved—or things that resembled her. My wife, and even the women I was drawn to before, all resembled Pamela Villoresi in some way. Now, I work as a musician—just like the man she loved.
Is this all just coincidence? I believe powerful memories embed themselves in the unconscious and quietly steer the course of our future. Had I not fallen for Pamela Villoresi as a teenager, there would be no Cho Sung-woo, the music director.
