Synopsis

Alison Tavel discovers a revolutionary synthesizer invented by her father in the 1970s. With the help of renowned musicians, she revives her father's mission to bring this unique instrument to the world. Though he passed away in a car accident just ten weeks after her birth and remained a mystery to her, Alison gradually forms an unexpected and profound bond with the father she never knew.

Director Alison Tavel learns that the father she never remembered—who died when she was an infant—was the inventor of a prototype synthesizer. As she begins to trace his past, the fond memories shared by her mother and others are challenged by surprising revelations. The Resynator is a deeply personal documentary with a strong narrative structure. Framed as a road movie that unravels her father's hidden life, the film's compelling pace and its exploration of synthesizer history and technological evolution make it especially captivating for music lovers.   • Alison Tavel is a filmmaker and music archivist. She has worked as an archival producer on the feature documentary Tom Petty: Somewhere You Feel Free (2021), chronicling the legacy of Tom Petty. The Resynator (2024) is her feature directorial debut, which premiered at SXSW and won the Audience Award.
