The intersection of film and music, the stories of filmmakers and their music, ‘Pick Up the Music’

The special curator project ‘Pick Up the Music’ features filmmakers as special curators who introduce music artists. This is a unique opportunity to experience the stories of both filmmakers and musicians. This year, the program will be divided into three segments: ‘Park Haeil Curated Baek Hyunjin,’ ‘Yoon Je-moon Curated No Seeds Watermelon Kim Dae-jung, CR Taegyu,’ and ‘Soo Ae Curated N E L L,’ where the artists will meet the audience.

  • [Performance] Tonus Trio
  • Tonus Trio was founded in 2001 by top performers from the New England Conservatory, such as violinist Yang Go-un and cellist Lee Kang-ho, and continues to be one of the best trios in Korea. After pianist Joo Hee-sung joined in 2012, they presented a stage titled ‘Russian Legacy,’ showcasing a treasure trove of Russian composers. In 2017, they completed the full performance of Brahms’ Piano Trio.

  • Actor Park Hae-il, who has many facets beyond categorization and a growing curiosity the more you see him, takes on the role of special curator for the 14th Jecheon International Music & Film Festival’s ‘One Summer Night.’ Let’s dive into the world of artists introduced by actor Park Hae-il, as he shares his story not on the movie screen but on the stage.

  • Actor Yoon Je-moon, who is known for his charismatic characters and versatile performances, including a high school girl role that transcends gender, returns as a special curator for the 14th Jecheon International Music & Film Festival’s ‘One Summer Night.’ Listen closely to the stories of the artists he introduces and the stories he unravels.

  • Actress Soo Ae, known for her graceful appearance and reliable acting, who has built a steady filmography, will visit the Jecheon International Music & Film Festival as a special curator. With her consistent affection for acting, art, and music, she will share her thoughts on the meaning of music to an actor and the musicians who perform it.

  • Baek Hyun-jin
  • Baek Hyun-jin is an artist, musician, and actor. Known for his work as a painter and singer, he has received notable praise for his performances. He is also recognized as an artist praised by legendary choreographer Pina Bausch.

  • Seedless Watermelon Kim Dae-jung
  • ‘Seedless Watermelon Kim Dae-jung’ is the blues singer-songwriter name of Kim Dae-jung. In his mid-thirties, he began his singing career after performing his own song at a café. He is known for blending classic American blues with Korea’s old folk and trot songs. This time, he will join forces with CR Taegyu for a joint performance.

  • CR Taegyu
  • CR Taegyu is a blues guitarist and singer-songwriter. He started his solo career in 2011 with his debut album , showcasing country-style slide guitar blues. His album was praised for combining traditional Delta blues with a lyrical approach, solidifying his distinct sound. He will be performing with Seedless Watermelon Kim Dae-jung in the ‘Pick Up the Music’ segment.

Film Information

  • Tan Dun: The Three Kung Fu Films
  • World-renowned composer and conductor Tan Dun composed the music for three critically acclaimed films – Ang Lee’s , Zhang Yimou’s , and Feng Xiaogang’s . These films, praised for blending traditional Chinese martial arts philosophy with visual arts, will be featured in a performance at the Jecheon International Music & Film Festival. The performance will combine the ‘Tonus Trio’ performing classic sonatas with multimedia art, rediscovering the essence of Chinese martial arts through music.
