Synopsis
The movie tells the story of how a “homegrown” rock 'n' roll band was born 55 years ago near Bayanaul among a team of construction workers. They became the progenitors of all popular music in Kazakh. No success myth is complete without a deep fall, bitter parting, and some very tough choices. But this story resonates not because of the success of the legendary group in the 1970s, but because of the hard road to achieve it.
Program Note
Dos-Mukasan is a rock band that was formed spontaneously by Kazakh engineering students under the former Soviet Union in 1967 to participate in a music festival. Over the next 50 years, the band toured the Soviet Union, the United States, and Europe, singing in Kazakh. Incorporating Kazakh folk music into their rock songs, the free-spirited bandmembers, who loved Beatles' music, overcame a dark period with their passion for music when even art was required to serve as a tool to sustain the socialist system. While Kazakh films may be unfamiliar in Korea, this honest Kazakh story moves us calmly. (Jin. Cho)
