- Born in London in 1889, Charles Spencer Chaplin began his acting career at the age of 17 by joining Fred Karno’s vaudeville troupe, a dominant force in the music hall scene. During a U.S. tour in 1912, he caught the eye of comedy pioneer Mack Sennett and moved his career base to the United States. In 1914, he introduced his iconic “Tramp” character, known for his bowler hat, short trousers, and signature cane. Chaplin went on to create numerous masterpieces, including The Kid, City Lights, and Modern Times.
