Program Note
Though Sixto Rodriguez remains one of the most enigmatic figures in pop music history, the sobering reality is that he never received the recognition he deserved—except in South Africa. With his raw, authentic voice and deeply resonant lyrics, Rodriguez had a profound impact on South African musicians and fans alike.
*Searching for Sugar Man* follows two devoted fans on a quest to uncover what happened to the singer who captivated them through his music. Director Malik Bendjelloul transforms this journey into a moving and heartfelt documentary, driven by his own admiration for Rodriguez. It is almost unbelievable that such extraordinary music and talent remained hidden from the world for so long.
With a fairytale-like narrative and an unforgettable soundtrack composed by Rodriguez himself, this film offers a powerful, emotional experience that lingers long after the credits roll.
