Program Note
Artistic spirit and creativity often flourish under oppression. *Go Go 70s* tells the story of a fiery band that shaped Korea’s underground music scene during the military dictatorship of the 1970s. Sang-gyu and Man-sik join forces to form a six-member band called “The Devils.” Together with aspiring singer Mimi, they move to Seoul and experience a meteoric rise to fame.
However, their success is threatened by constant governmental censorship and internal discord. Still, the spirit of youth cannot be silenced. Often described as the Korean version of *The Doors*, the film cleverly adopts the stylistic conventions of Hollywood music biopics while offering a subtle, poignant portrayal of the darkness of the era. The live performance scenes—captured with dynamic camera angles and immersive sound—are truly spectacular.

Choi Ho studied directing at Chung-Ang University and earned a master’s degree in film practice from Université Paris 8. His directorial debut, *Bye June*, sensitively captured the confusion and passion of youth, while *Who Are You?* offered a fresh and stylish depiction of young adult emotions.
With *Bloody Tie*, he gained both critical and audience acclaim for his sharp social insight. In *Go Go 70s*, Choi returns with his signature style—this time fueled by his own experience playing in a band during his school days. Notably, the film’s performance scenes were all recorded live on set—vocals, instruments, and all—highlighting the raw energy and authenticity of the music.
