Program Note

This film is Quentin Tarantino’s second Western following *Django Unchained* (2012). It inherits elements from *Dragon Gate Inn* (1967), being an action film set in a confined and immobile space, and draws from *Murder on the Orient Express* (1974) in that the full truth is only revealed at the end.

The film opens with a long take capturing a wagon crossing a vast snow-covered field in the distance, accompanied by a four-bar musical passage composed by Ennio Morricone. The repeated motif builds an atmosphere of unease, foreshadowing the brutality to come. (HWANG Deok-ho)

Director

  • Quentin Tarantino
    • Quentin Tarantino
    • Quentin Tarantino made a sensational debut with *Reservoir Dogs*, earning the Best Newcomer Award from the London Critics Circle and the Best Film Award at the Stockholm Film Festival—announcing the arrival of a true auteur. From his first feature, Tarantino showcased a signature style, which he pushed even further in his breakout film *Pulp Fiction*.
    • Film critic Roger Ebert called *Pulp Fiction* “the most influential film of the 1990s,” and it went on to win 16 awards, including the Palme d’Or at the 47th Cannes Film Festival.

His eighth film, *The Hateful Eight*, shaped by a wide range of global cinematic influences, marks a stylistic peak with its stripped-down minimalism and intense suspense—setting it apart from his earlier works.
