Program Note

*The Mission*, directed in 1986 by Roland Joffé—also known for *The Killing Fields* (1984) and *City of Joy* (1992)—is considered one of his masterpieces and was awarded the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival that year. Set during the historical “Guaraní War” along the Uruguay River in 1754, the film stirred controversy for its orientalist perspective and distortion of historical facts. Nevertheless, Ennio Morricone’s “Gabriel’s Oboe” remains deeply moving to this day, resonating through the breathtaking landscapes of South America, where mighty rivers and waterfalls cut through lush tropical forests.
